I’m sure you’ve noticed that Mars, Inc. wants to make their candy bars smaller, keeping them under 250 calories and ridding themselves of the King Size option. I saw the story on the Today Show this morning and stopped in mid blow-dry to watch the entire clip.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s smart? Do you think it will just cause people to buy more?
Personally, I think it’s a good idea. Do we REALLY need King Sized candy bars? Do we?
One of my best friends lives in London (she’s American…hi Elizabeth!) I asked her about the portion sizes in Europe compared to the portion sizes here. Surprise! They’re much smaller. I know you’re not shocked by this, it’s common knowledge. Do they feel deprived because they’re not getting as much food per sitting at their local restaurants? No. They’re getting normal sized portions and it’s what they’re used to.
I love America, don’t get me wrong, but we have a large epidemic here that we need to address. Obviously Americans (overall) can’t control themselves. They want more for their money. We joke around at work about how much you get at Chipotle’s for so little money. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been able to finish an entire Burrito Bowl from Chipotle. We get Chipotle’s every Friday at work and afterward it’s like we’re all zombies that need to be rolled around our office because there’s just SO MUCH FOOD. I know myself so I eat half and then save the rest for dinner. It’s just too much.
Why do we need so much food? Why do we need Venti sized Crappachinos and King Sized candy bars and ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFETS? (although I will admit I love going to the all you can eat lunch buffet at our favorite Indian joint, but that’s mostly because I like to try a little bit of everything…not because I’m trying to gouge myself full of unnecessary amounts of food.)
I was raised in a household where you had to finish everything on your plate.
“There are children who are starving in Africa!” (ugghh writing that just made me cringe.)
My mom had a very heavy hand and would dump tons of food on my plate and get pissed if I didn’t eat it all. This is how I was raised, and I know many others out there can relate. I understand the no wasting food concept but we need to be smarter about the portion sizes. I wouldn’t waste food if I was served the proper amount.
Is it too late to change this concept? Do you think we’re already in over our heads and trying to make a change like this now will only do more harm than good?
I hope not. We need to start somewhere right?
